Fluorescent UV sodalite from Greenland with some pieces showcasing tenebrescence, where the stone’s color changes to a purple when exposed to UV light. Sodalite that is tenebrescent is also known as hackmanite. Unlike Afghanistan hackmanite, if you expose the tenebrescence to a bright white light, the purple fades instantly. In Afghan hackmanite, it takes days or weeks for the purple tenebrescence to fade.
Note: Tenebrescence is usually displayed when exposed to shortwave (254nm) UV light. If there is tenebrescence from longwave (365nm) UV light, these pieces are considered higher value as they are rarer.
These pieces can also contain a mixture of other minerals seen under shortwave UV light. These can be the following, although they are not guaranteed: blue analcime, red tugtupite, green uranyl, white chkalovite, polylithionite.
Known as the brightest UV sodalite in the world, Greenland sodalite has become the benchmark in the UV mineral world, setting a world-class standard to which all other sodalites are compared.
Fluorescent sodalite, or hackmanite from Greenland is a rare find for collectors. You won’t find much of this material on the market. Each piece is uniquely amazing.
They were nicknamed "Yooperlites" which is derived from the name “yooper”. A yooper is a nickname for the Upper Peninsula natives and these fluorescent stones quickly gained fame. After data was published on these fluorescent stones, it was discovered that sodalite is the actual true mineral that is fluorescing orange.
365nm UV light is often called "blacklight". Before the advent of longwave UV LEDs, blacklight fluorescent tubes, (the kinds used in hippie days to light up psychedelic posters) were the standard longwave UV light for our hobby. They were not very powerful but they did light a large area.
