A beautiful and classic example of fluorescent Greenland sodalite, custom cut into a polished sphere from material collected in the Ilímaussaq Complex.
Unlike commercially available sodalite spheres, this piece was fashioned from genuine Greenland fluorescent mineral material and displays the complex mineral associations characteristic of this remarkable locality.
The primary minerals are sodalite (hackmanite), chkalovite and analcime, creating an attractive mottled appearance across the polished surface.
Under longwave UV, the fluorescent sodalite glows an exceptionally strong fiery orange, illuminating large portions of the sphere. The response becomes even more interesting under midwave UV, where brilliant orange fluorescence is interspersed with vivid green fluorescent areas, producing a dramatic multicolor pattern across the specimen.
The hackmanite also exhibits tenebrescence, darkening in color following UV exposure and gradually returning to its original coloration. This reversible reaction can be repeated again and again.
Greenland sodalite spheres are rarely encountered compared with ordinary sodalite lapidary material. Only a handful in the world exist. Each sphere is individually cut from natural Ilímaussaq material, making it completely unique. No two spheres are alike.
They were nicknamed "Yooperlites" which is derived from the name “yooper”. A yooper is a nickname for the Upper Peninsula natives and these fluorescent stones quickly gained fame. After data was published on these fluorescent stones, it was discovered that sodalite is the actual true mineral that is fluorescing orange.
365nm UV light is often called "blacklight". Before the advent of longwave UV LEDs, blacklight fluorescent tubes, (the kinds used in hippie days to light up psychedelic posters) were the standard longwave UV light for our hobby. They were not very powerful but they did light a large area.

So. much. visible purple light. We selected a bunch of rocks as a demonstration. Took pictures of them under his flashlight without the filter and then with the filter.
