MSG1169: Ussingite with Sodalite

Rare green fluorescent variety

Ussingite is a rare mineral found only in Greenland and Kola Russia in any significant quantity. Only the material from Greenland is suitable for gem making - often found as a beautiful purple “Quartzite like” gem material such as this piece. Ussingite has a quite variable fluorescence; most typical is a bright orange like sodalite, 2nd is none - much of the gemmy ussingite is not fluorescent at all. A third (and quite rare) is a nice green color as in this piece.

This is basically a large slab of gem ussingite, with sodalite at the edges. The black mineral is arfvedsonite, and there is some matrix of lujavrite. Two views are shown (SW) of the same face. Under LW only the sodalite is fluorescent (with a slight whitish glow coming from the ussingite). The brighter green fluorescence is from uranyl salts - mainly around the arfvedsonite.

Greenland
Greenland is home to over 250 varieties of minerals. Many of them are fluorescent and new ones are being discovered each year. Tugtupite is perhaps the most famous mineral from Greenland - famous for its deep saturated red glow. Sodalite (var hackmanite) has become famous in the past few years as one of the deepest “color-change” varieties found and is always in great demand. Other rarities include chkalovite, ussingite, sorensenite, polylithionite, analcime, and more. Many of these are tenebrescent, phosphorescent, and have varied responses under multiple wavelengths. All are excessively rare.
