MSG1151: Deeply Tenebrescent Red Sodalite

Extreme Tenebrescence - even sunlight

MSG1151animWe’ve given this material the nickname “Red Sodalite” because it turns red when exposed to sunlight. Normally white (if left in the dark for a long time) it quickly changes color upon exposure to sunlight or LW UV. When exposed to SW UV it changes to a deep purple.

This color change causes the SW fluorescence to darken to a deep rust color as seen below. Under LW the typical bright orange sodalite color is striking. Perhaps the best lighting to display this piece is fullwave (SW+LW) as that brings out all the color. The matrix has a dull blue/green glow under short and midwave. Note the center areas of the sodalite - it glows a bluish/magenta under SW and this area is also quite phosphorescent - very unusual for sodalite.

The animation shows the color change from its natural state, to LW (or sunlight), to SW. The purple color contrasts nicely to the white matrix.

More information about sodalite can be found on our Mineral Data pages.

Greenland
Greenland is home to over 250 varieties of minerals. Many of them are fluorescent and new ones are being discovered each year. Tugtupite is perhaps the most famous mineral from Greenland - famous for its deep saturated red glow. Sodalite (var hackmanite) has become famous in the past few years as one of the deepest “color-change” varieties found and is always in great demand. Other rarities include chkalovite, ussingite, sorensenite, polylithionite, analcime, and more.  Many of these are tenebrescent, phosphorescent, and have varied responses under multiple wavelengths. All are excessively rare.

The MinerShop web site offers an in depth review of all the fluorescent minerals found in Greenlnad.
