MSG1148: Greenland “Margarosonite”

Bright, bold and beautiful - from a rare pocket of material

In 2005 one of the members of that year’s Geo-Adventure made a spectacular find. We were able to extract a little of the pocket that year, but the major work had to wait until the following year. In 2006 once the snowpack melted we were able to clean out what remained. This is one of the finer pieces from the pocket and the only one we have left. It has resided in my personal collection - and will stay there until sold.

When first found it reminded everyone of a particularly fine Franklin margarosonite, so it earned the nickname “Greenland Margarosonite”. Let me be clear! It is not margarosonite. Bright FL red tugtupite surrounds excessively bright blue/wht chkalovite (almost pearly). The matrix is chkalovite, analcime and sodalite, with a few others thrown in for good measure.

More information about chkalovite can be found in our Mineral Data section.

Greenland
Greenland is home to over 250 varieties of minerals. Many of them are fluorescent and new ones are being discovered each year. Tugtupite is perhaps the most famous mineral from Greenland - famous for its deep saturated red glow. Sodalite (var hackmanite) has become famous in the past few years as one of the deepest “color-change” varieties found and is always in great demand. Other rarities include chkalovite, ussingite, sorensenite, polylithionite, analcime, and more.  Many of these are tenebrescent, phosphorescent, and have varied responses under multiple wavelengths. All are excessively rare.

The MinerShop web site offers an in depth review of all the fluorescent minerals found in Greenlnad.
