MSG1134: Sorensenite

Rare Single Locale Mineral - Exceptional Specimen

Sorensenite is a rare beryllium tin silicate found only in Greenland. Specimens usually are small as it forms as solid masses within cavities/vugs of very hard analcime/lujavrite matrix - making it virtually impossible to extract specimens of any size. It is easily broken during removal if proper mining tools are not used.  This is a large specimen with well-formed crystals atop an analcime matrix - rarely encountered this size.

Greenland
Greenland is home to over 250 varieties of minerals. Many of them are fluorescent and new ones are being discovered each year. Tugtupite is perhaps the most famous mineral from Greenland - famous for its deep saturated red glow. Sodalite (var hackmanite) has become famous in the past few years as one of the deepest “color-change” varieties found and is always in great demand. Other rarities include chkalovite, ussingite, sorensenite, polylithionite, analcime, and more.  Many of these are tenebrescent, phosphorescent, and have varied responses under multiple wavelengths. All are excessively rare.

The MinerShop web site offers an in depth review of all the fluorescent minerals found in Greenlnad.
