Once a vein (or boulder) is determined to have “the right stuff” a hole is carefully drilled and cleaned. An explosive charge is inserted and detonated by a rope detonator. If all goes as planned, the rock will split and can easily be worked for the desired material.
In some cases, poor placement of the generator prior to a blast can result in your genset flying down the cliff (watch the blue box in the lower right corner of the movie - and listen to Peter’s expression of dismay as he watches a 200lb rock bounce off his genset and propel it 50’ down the hill).
