Fluorescent Minerals of Greenland
The fluorescent minerals of Greenland are a unique lot indeed. A wide variety of responses can be seen - not only determined by mineral type, but also by locale within the complex. Tugtupite from one area can fluoresce completely different from tugtupite from another area, and might have its own unique set of complementary fluorescent minerals. With experience it is relatively easy to identify the locality where a specific mineral is found just by the fluorescence.
Some of these locales produce important varieties and deserve a separate discussion. In several cases combinations of minerals create multi-colored specimens which have been given a nickname for the rock - thus allowing identification of the locality and the mineral types.
Indexed below, each section provides pictures and descriptions of the varieties and/or popular combinations which have been discovered. This is not a complete list. Many minerals have been found that we have no identification for, and combinations can create so many unique display specimens it is beyond the capabilities of this webmaster to keep up with them all.
