Chkalovite

image017Chkalovite is a rare beryllium silicate only found in a few places in the world - Russia and Greenland have the most notable occurrences.

Chkalovite is typically clear or white, and the crystals are not well formed. It is usually found in massive habit in hydrothermal veins within the complex. It is almost always associated with other rare minerals - most notably tugtupite.

image019The general understanding is that tugtupite often forms as a replacement mineral of chkalovite. Very often one will find specimens of chkalovite rimmed by a vein of bright red FL tugtupite.

The fluorescence of chkalovite appears to be widely variable. We have noted colors ranging from bright green, blue, blue/white to white. Some appear to be quite phosphorescent.

Formula: Na2BeSi2O6
