eucryptite - china
Eucryptite from China is the brightest variety of Eucryptite I’ve seen, and is a new find that we made last year. Its color rivals that of the nicest tugtupite, with a slightly different hue. Many pieces also have areas of bright blue/white FL scheelite, and some other areas of blue fluorescent fluorite, as well as a dull orange fluorescent calcite. An additional mineral on these pieces is chlorophane, but it is so light sensitive that after only a couple of exposures to UV the fluorescence stops. Initially it is bright green with strong phosphorescence.

Certainly a rare example of extremely bright minerals from a unique locale. The bright red saturated color of the eucryptite, the VERY rich coverage, large sizes, and rare locale makes these top-notch specimens. When we initially discovered this deposit there was considerable confusion. At first we thought it was Hsianghualite, but XRD testing finally confirmed it to be eucryptite. But after numerous people expressed further doubts, we have had a “second opinion” on the identity of this material - a 2nd XRD test. It comes from a locale that has not produced eucryptite, shows a cleavage unusual for the species, and is fluorescent under MW (and even LW to a degree) which caused some to doubt the ID. But this 2nd test again confirmed its ID. It is certainly eucryptite - perhaps the brightest around....
